FF4 has character-locked equipment rather than class-based restrictions. Cecil uses swords, Kain uses spears, Rydia uses whips and rods, Rosa uses bows and staves, and Edge uses katanas and claws. Temporary party members like Tellah, Yang, Edward, and Cid have their own pools. Check the "Characters" column before buying.
Two weapons sit above everything else. Ragnarok is the strongest sword in the game at 150 ATK, found as a sealed weapon in the Lunar Subterrane. Masamune is Edge's endgame katana at 80 ATK, also sealed in the Lunar Subterrane. Rods and staves can be used as items in battle for free magic effects; the elemental rods (Fire, Ice, Thunder) cast their respective spells when used this way. And don't sell the Knife from Yang's wife. It deals 9,999 damage when thrown by Edge at the final boss.
Swords
Cecil's exclusive weapon type across both his Dark Knight and Paladin forms. Early swords like the Shadowblade and Deathbringer are Dark Knight only and become useless after Mt. Ordeals. Once Cecil becomes a Paladin, his upgrade path runs through Mythril Sword, Flame Sword, Icebrand, Light Sword, Defender, and Excalibur. Excalibur comes from trading Adamantite to Kokkol's Smithy; don't wait on this quest. Ragnarok replaces it in the final dungeon. The Avenger (from Sylvan Cave) auto-berserks Cecil, which sounds bad but actually works for auto-battle grinding.

Spears
Kain's weapon type. Spears pair with his Jump command, which deals double damage with the equipped weapon. The elemental lances (Fire Lance, Ice Lance) add element to Jump damage, letting you exploit weaknesses from the air. Holy Lance is Kain's best until endgame, sealed in Lunar Subterrane B7 behind the Plague boss fight. Blood Lance from Eblan Castle drains HP on hit, which is useful for keeping Kain alive during tougher fights. Gungnir is a solid alternative found elsewhere in the Lunar Subterrane.
| Weapon | ATK | ACC | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spear | 9 | 99 | 60 Gil |
| Wind Spear | 55 | 80 | Treasure |

Katanas
Edge's primary weapon type. His upgrade path goes Kunai, Ashura, Kotetsu, Kikuichimonji, Murasame, and finally Masamune. Murasame is the first sealed weapon you'll find in the Lunar Subterrane (B3, guarded by White Dragon). Masamune is the last sealed weapon on B8, behind Ogopogo. Edge dual-wields, so pair a katana in one hand with a claw, dagger, or boomerang in the other.
| Weapon | ATK | ACC | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ashura | 32 | 90 | 7,000 Gil |
| Kotetsu | 40 | 90 | 11,000 Gil |
| Kikuichimonji | 50 | 90 | Treasure |
| Murasame | 63 | 95 | Treasure |
| Masamune | 80 | 99 | Treasure |
Daggers
Shared between Edge and Rydia. Dancing Dagger from Mist casts Confuse when used as an item in battle. Mythril Knife has high accuracy at 99 and works as a cheap pickup from Mythril. Mage Masher from Sylvan Cave is the strongest dagger in the game and makes a good off-hand option for Edge.
| Weapon | ATK | ACC | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mythril Knife | 20 | 99 | 3,000 Gil |
| Kunai | 25 | 90 | 4,000 Gil |
| Dancing Dagger | 28 | 94 | 5,000 Gil |
| Mage Masher | 35 | 99 | Treasure |
Claws
Shared between Yang and Edge. The elemental claws (Fire, Ice, Thunder) are cheap and available early at Fabul and Baron. Fairy Claw and Hell Claw come from dungeon treasure. Cat Claw has 99 accuracy. Yang leaves the party permanently before you reach the endgame, so these mostly benefit Edge as an off-hand option alongside katanas.
| Weapon | ATK | ACC | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fire Claw | 12 | 80 | 350 Gil |
| Ice Claw | 15 | 80 | 450 Gil |
| Thunder Claw | 18 | 80 | 550 Gil |
| Fairy Claw | 25 | 85 | Treasure |
| Cat Claw | 30 | 99 | Treasure |
| Hell Claw | 35 | 85 | Treasure |
Bows & arrows
Rosa's weapon type. Bows require arrows to function; damage combines both the bow's ATK and the arrow's ATK. Rosa attacks from the back row with no penalty, so she should always be there. Elemental arrows (Fire, Ice, Thunder) from Troia add element to her attacks. Artemis Bow paired with Artemis Arrows is her endgame setup from the Lunar Subterrane. Yoichi's Bow and Yoichi Arrow from the Land of Summons secret area are the mid-game upgrade to aim for.
| Weapon | ATK | ACC | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bow | 10 | 75 | 220 Gil |
| Crossbow | 20 | 75 | 700 Gil |

Rods
Rydia and Tellah's primary weapon type. Elemental rods (Ice Rod, Flame Rod, Thunder Rod) can be used as items in battle to cast their respective spells for free, which is extremely useful for conserving MP in long dungeons. Fairy Rod from the Land of Summons gives +10 Intellect. Stardust Rod from Lunar Subterrane B5 is the endgame pick at 55 ATK with +15 Intellect.
| Weapon | ATK | ACC | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rod | 3 | 40 | 100 Gil |
| Ice Rod | 5 | 45 | 220 Gil |
| Flame Rod | 7 | 45 | 380 Gil |
| Thunder Rod | 10 | 50 | 700 Gil |
| Rod of Change | 12 | 50 | Treasure |
| Lilith Rod | 13 | 10 | Treasure |
| Fairy Rod | 30 | 55 | 5,000 Gil |
| Stardust Rod | 55 | 60 | Treasure |
Staves
Rosa's alternative to bows, plus Porom and FuSoYa. Healing Staff casts Cure when used as an item, giving Rosa a free heal action. Kinesis Staff from the Land of Summons provides +10 Spirit, boosting her healing output. Sage's Staff from Lunar Subterrane B2 is the strongest at 50 ATK with +15 Spirit. Power Staff from Eblan Settlement adds +10 Strength, which is a niche pick for physical-focused builds.
| Weapon | ATK | ACC | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Staff | 4 | 45 | 160 Gil |
| Healing Staff | 8 | 50 | 480 Gil |
| Power Staff | 30 | 99 | 2,000 Gil |
| Kinesis Staff | 36 | 60 | 7,000 Gil |
| Sage's Staff | 50 | 55 | Treasure |
| Rune Staff | 52 | 60 | Treasure |
Whips
Rydia-only. Whips hit from the back row, so keep Rydia there. The upgrade path is straightforward: Whip, Chain Whip, Blitz Whip (all purchasable), then Flame Whip from the Lunar Subterrane. Whips deal less damage than summons, but they cost no MP and Rydia will be attacking between summon casts.
| Weapon | ATK | ACC | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whip | 20 | 50 | 3,000 Gil |
| Chain Whip | 30 | 55 | 6,000 Gil |
| Blitz Whip | 40 | 60 | 10,000 Gil |
| Flame Whip | 55 | 65 | Treasure |
| Dragon's Whisker | 55 | 75 | Treasure |
Axes & hammers
Cid's weapon type. Cid is only in your party for a short stretch of the game, so don't invest heavily here. Wooden Hammer from Troia is cheap and effective. The Gaia Hammer from Tower of Zot is a solid free upgrade. Ogrekiller at 80 ATK is the strongest axe, available from Tomra or the Tower of Babel monster chest. Poison Axe and Dwarven Axe round out the options.
| Weapon | ATK | ACC | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wooden Hammer | 45 | 75 | 80 Gil |
| Mythril Hammer | 55 | 75 | 8,000 Gil |
| Dwarven Axe | 62 | 69 | 15,000 Gil |
| Gaia Hammer | 70 | 75 | Treasure |
| Poison Axe | 75 | 70 | Treasure |
| Ogrekiller | 80 | 69 | 45,000 Gil |
| Rune Axe | 100 | 60 | Treasure |
Boomerangs
Edge can equip these. Boomerangs hit from the back row, making them a safe off-hand choice. Moonring Blade from Sylvan Cave is the stronger option at 45 ATK.
| Weapon | ATK | ACC | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boomerang | 20 | 80 | 3,000 Gil |
| Moonring Blade | 45 | 85 | Treasure |
Harps
Edward-only. He's in your party briefly and his weapon options are limited to Lamia's Harp from Antlion Cave. Edward's real value is his support abilities, not his damage output.
| Weapon | ATK | ACC | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dreamer's Harp | 8 | 85 | Treasure |
| Lamia's Harp | 15 | 50 | Treasure |
Throwing weapons
Edge-only. These can't be equipped as regular weapons; they're consumed when thrown via the Throw command. Shurikens are purchasable at Tomra and deal solid damage from the back row. Fuma Shuriken hits harder but costs 50,000 gil. The Knife from Yang's wife always deals 9,999 damage when thrown, so save it for Zeromus.
| Weapon | ATK | ACC | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shuriken | 40 | 99 | 20,000 Gil |
| Fuma Shuriken | 80 | 99 | 50,000 Gil |
| Knife | 255 | 99 | Treasure |
