Head east from Mt. Hobs through the forest and between the mountains. Fabul Castle sits alone in a small desert area. Before going inside, continue east past the castle as far as you can, then head north to find a Chocobo Forest hidden in a circular ring of trees. Grab the Gysahl Greens from the grass patch inside (14/54) and fight a Gatlinger on the overworld for the bestiary entry. Then head into the castle.
Fabul Castle
1F. Rest at the inn (100 Gil) and restock items. The armor shop sells Demon Helm (980 Gil), Demon Armor (3,000 Gil), and Demon Gloves (800 Gil) for Cecil. Buy the full set. The weapon shop has Fire Claw (350 Gil), Ice Claw (450 Gil), and Thunder Claw (550 Gil) for Yang.
Head upstairs to 2F, quick save, then continue up to the throne room. Approach the throne to trigger a cutscene. When prompted, select Yes to begin the castle defense. Rosa and Rydia leave the party for this sequence.
Castle defense
Seven consecutive battles with no breaks. Cecil, Edward, and Yang handle all of them. The fights aren't hard, but one bestiary entry is easy to miss.
- Round 1: Baron Warrior x2, Captain. Kill the Captain first
- Round 2: Sahagin, Domovoi, Leshy. Nothing new
- Round 3: Baron Warrior x2, Captain. Same as round 1
- Round 4: Gargoyle. Solo enemy, quick kill
- Round 5: Sahagin, Domovoi, Leshy. Same as round 2
- Round 6: Baron Warrior x2, Captain. Last chance for the entry
- Round 7: Dragoon. Unwinnable. Auto-attack to speed it up
A long cutscene plays after the final round. Rosa is taken, and the Crystal is lost. Kain is revealed to be working with Golbez.
After the defense
Once you regain control, you're in the throne room. Check the northwest pot for Hermes Shoes (15/54). On the opposite side, step on the floor switch to open a secret door. Follow the passage to find three chests: Spider's Silk, Demon Shield, and Ether (61-63/342).
Return to the inn on 1F and talk to the innkeeper. Select Yes to rest. A cutscene plays, and you'll wake up in the East Tower with the Deathbringer.
East Tower. Open the chest on 3F for a Tent (64/342). Go downstairs to 2F and check the bottom-right pot for Bacchus's Cider (16/54). Exit the tower.
West Tower. Enter the west tower. On 1F, check the top-left pot for Zeus's Wrath (17/54) and open all three chests: Bomb Fragment, Antarctic Wind, and Potion (65-67/342). That's everything for Fabul: 7 chests and 3 hidden items.
Exit the castle through the south door on 1F and board the ship east of the castle. A long cutscene follows. Cecil wakes up alone on a beach, stripped of his party. Head east into the nearby town to begin the Mysidia & Mt. Ordeals chapter.
