Cecil wakes up alone on a beach. Head east into the nearby town. The people of Mysidia remember what Cecil did when he raided them for the Water Crystal, and they aren't happy to see him.

Mysidia

Some NPCs are hostile. The wizard in the town center turns you into a Toad (talk to him again to cure it), the dancer at the inn inflicts Pig, and the bartender poisons your drink. Avoid all three unless you enjoy the novelty.

The shops here are a step up. Buy Hi-Potions from the item shop if you can afford them; they'll be critical for the Scarmiglione fight where throwing them at the undead boss deals 500 damage each. The armor shop sells Paladin gear (Light Shield, Light Helm, Knight's Armor, Gauntlets) that you can't equip yet, but you'll want them after Mt. Ordeals. Don't buy them now. Pick up a Healing Staff (480 Gil) from the weapon shop for your white mage, and a Flame Rod (380 Gil) for your black mage if you want the Intellect boost.

Head north to the Manor of Prayers and speak to the Elder. Palom (Black Mage) and Porom (White Mage) join the party. Restock items, then leave town.

On the overworld, go east then north through the woods, and east again until you spot a large forest. Head south into the Chocobo Forest and grab the Gysahl Greens from the grass patch (18/54). Talk to the White Chocobo inside to restore MP for free. The Fat Chocobo summoning spot on the north end lets you store items if your inventory is getting full. Leave the forest and head northeast to find the Mt. Ordeals entrance in the mountain area.

Mt. Ordeals

Most enemies here are undead. Fire spells and curative magic are effective against them. Lilith (466 HP) is the rarest spawn; if she doesn't appear during the ascent, she has a higher spawn rate on the way back down.

Entrance. Head northeast to find a column of fire blocking the path. Palom steps forward and melts it with a spell. Another cutscene plays right after. Once you regain control, go northwest past the stairs and open the chest for a Potion (68/342). Head upstairs and grab a second Potion from the chest directly above (69/342). Continue up and go through the door.

Ridge. Follow the linear path north. Just before the next door, Sage Tellah rejoins the party. Go through the door.

Pass. Head west and up the stairs to find an Ether (70/342). Return to the entrance and go north up two sets of stairs, then west. Open the chest below the north door for another Ether (71/342). That's all 4 chests. Go through the door to the summit.

Summit. At the split, head east first to reach a save point. Use a Tent, save, and heal everyone to full. Then take the north path and approach the bridge.

How to beat Scarmiglione

Scarmiglione is the first of the Four Fiends and fights you twice in a row. The first form has 3,500 HP with no elemental weakness and arrives with a pack of Skullnants. The second form is undead with 3,523 HP, weak to Fire and Holy, and absorbs Ice. Stock up on Hi-Potions before this fight; each one deals 500 damage to the undead second form.

Heal up and quick save after the first fight so you don't have to redo it if you lose. Cross the bridge to trigger the second battle immediately. Scarmiglione is now undead and attacks from behind, so flip your party formation if you want your mages in front.

Cecil becomes a Paladin

Quick save after the second fight. Interact with the glowing tablet between the gravestones. Cecil is transported to the Hall of Mirrors where a forced battle against his Dark Knight self begins. Keep yourself alive with Cure and items, and Defend until the dialogue is done. Cecil transforms into a Paladin.

Make your way back down the mountain. Fight everything on the way out to get Cecil some levels; Lilith also spawns more frequently during the descent if you still need her bestiary entry. You should have 48/197 entries before leaving.

Back on the overworld, head west to Mysidia. The townsfolk have warmed up to Cecil now that he's a Paladin. Head to the armor shop and buy the Paladin gear you skipped earlier: Light Shield (700 Gil), Light Helm (4,000 Gil), Knight's Armor (8,000 Gil), and Gauntlets (3,000 Gil). Sell your old Dark Knight equipment to help cover the cost.

Visit the Elder in the Manor of Prayers. After the cutscene, the building east of his house is now unlocked. Head inside and step on the warp pad. The Devil's Road takes you straight back to Baron.
