Chests

Fly to the northwestern corner of the underworld and land near the cave. The Sylvan Cave has 30 chests (plus 2 in the Sylvan Cottage at the end), a hidden chamber with 6 monster-in-a-box fights, and poison floors on every level. Cast Float once before entering; it persists through all floors.

Sylvan Cave

The dungeon has multiple exits per floor, creating a sprawling path through different sections. The recommended route visits every chest: B1 → B2 → south exit to B1 → southwest exit to B2 → northwest exit to B3 → Sylvan Cottage.

B1 (first visit). Head east and open both reachable chests for Angel Arrow and Bestiary (245-246/342). Go south, west, then south down the stairs to B2.

B2 (first visit). Head east, north, then down the stairs to B3.

B3 (first visit). Head north and open all three chests. The top-right one is accessible from a secret passage just below the bottom chest: Hi-Potion, Maiden's Kiss, and Fairy Rod (247-249/342). Go south to the middle of the corridor, then east through a secret passage. Follow it east, north, east to exit above five open chests. Head upstairs.

B2 (second visit). Follow the linear passage east and south to a small room with four chests: Remedy, Bomb Core, 2,000 Gil, and 3,000 Gil (250-253/342). Continue south to five more chests: Maiden's Kiss, Maiden's Kiss, Ether, Bestiary, and Emergency Exit (254-258/342). Step on the hole under the chests to drop to B3.

Hidden chamber

B3 (second visit). Head north and west through a hidden passage to find a warp pad. Step on it to reach the hidden chamber. Every chest here is a monster-in-a-box. Heal up and quick save before each one.

  • Top left: Evil Dreamer x6 → Red Fang (259/342)
  • Top middle: Evil Dreamer x6 → White Fang (260/342)
  • Top right: Evil Dreamer x6 → Blue Fang (261/342)
  • Bottom left: Malboro x2, Mammon x2 → Moonring Blade (262/342)
  • Bottom middle: Malboro x4 → Avenger (263/342)
  • Bottom right: Undergrounder x2 → Medusa Arrow (264/342)

Leviathan makes the Malboro/Mammon fights much easier. After looting all six chests, take the warp pad on the right side to exit to the underworld. Heal up, re-enter, and continue.

Remaining chests

B1 (second visit). Make your way to B2 (south stairs). Head south and up the stairs back to a different part of B1. Recast Float since you left the dungeon earlier. Head northeast and push right into a secret passage. Follow it north, east, north, and west to reach a chest: Elven Bow (265/342). Backtrack to the entrance and go west. Follow the path northwest to two chests: Cottage and 1,000 Gil (266-267/342). Go south and take the nearest stairs down.

B2 (third visit). Follow the path north, then east and push right through a secret passage. Follow it south, east, south, east, north, then exit west to reach a chest: another monster-in-a-box against Tiny Toad x6 and Bog Witch. Reward: Mage Masher (268/342). Exit the passage and head south to the middle staircase. Go up.

B1 (third visit). Head north to five chests: Arctic Wind, Golden Apple, Soma Drop, Ether, and Hi-Potion (269-273/342). Go south and down the stairs to B2. Head north and down to B3.

B3 (final). Open the chest near the entrance for an Elixir (274/342). That's 30/30 for the cave. Follow the south path and enter the building.

Sylvan Cottage

Talk to everyone inside, including the sleeping person in the bed (this triggers a side quest later). Open both chests for Hell Claw and Cat Claw (275-276/342). Head upstairs and step on the platform to leave. You'll return here later for the Sylph summon.
