Vikings' Cove & Nepto Temple

7 New Enemies 9 Chests 2 Items

Walk north from Tozus Tunnel to the coast and into Vikings’ Cove. The Nepto Dragon has been terrorising the bay, the Vikings can’t sail, and the Enterprise sits moored at the dock waiting for whoever can fix the problem. This chapter covers Vikings’ Cove and Nepto Temple for 9 chests, 2 items, 7 new bestiary entries, and 1 missable boss.

Vikings’ Cove

Shops

The cove has no random encounters, but the walls are full of secret passages hiding the 6 chests. Check every wall section to find them.

From the entrance, follow the path until you spot a chest on the right. A hidden passage in the top middle of this room leads to 300 Gil.

Walk north and take the stairs up to 2F. On the left side of the room, a secret passage opens behind the cannonballs. Walk through it, cut south, then take the stairs down to two chests with 300 Gil each. A healing spring sits in the corner of this lower room, free to use any time you’re in the cove.

Back on 2F, cut right from the stairs. Between the cannonballs on the right is another hidden path leading to three Lv3 Black Magic scrolls: Thundara, Fira, and Blizzara. Spread these across three different mages instead of loading all three on one. At your current level the Lv3 slots only hold 1-2 charges each, so spreading them gives every mage a hard-hitting cast during the Giant Rat fight in Nepto Temple.

All 6 cove chests collected. Rest at the healing spring, then hit the shops on 1F before sailing out:

  • Magic shop: first place that sells Mini (700 Gil) in a shop. Buy a copy as backup if you want a second caster on it; the rest of the magic stock duplicates Canaan and Tozus.
  • Item shop: first place that sells Maiden’s Kiss (100 Gil) for Toad cure; pick up two or three for later dungeons. Top up Gold Needles (100 Gil) for petrification if you’re light.

Nepto Dragon

The Enterprise is moored at the dock, ready to sail.

Board the ship at the dock and sail north into the open bay. The Nepto Dragon ambushes you on contact.

The fight is a Bahamut-style unwinnable encounter. The bestiary entry registers on contact, so select Flee on turn 1 from every character and escape locks in immediately.

After the escape, sail back to shore and walk north to the Nepto Temple entrance.

Nepto Temple

Walk up to the dragon statue at the temple’s front gate. Cast Mini if you’ve dispelled it since Tozus, then step into the empty left eye socket to drop down to B1. The Mini-party rules from Tozus Tunnel apply again: physicals deal 1 damage, so swap front-liners back to White Mage, Black Mage, or Red Mage and lean on spells plus the Fire Staff’s free Fire item-cast.

The empty eye socket is the temple entrance.

Petit and Lilliputian are the priority targets: they cycle Fire / Blizzard / Thunder spells that bypass Mini and back-row reductions. Drop them first with your strongest -ara cast. Blood Worm has the highest HP at 98 and chains poison via Fight; kill them quickly. Poison Bat is weak to Wind, so any spare Aero charge ends the fight in one cast. Wererat is the fastest of the bunch but only swings physically; Mini neutralises it.

From B1, follow the path through to B2 where you’ll find two holes in the floor. Take the left hole first for a Shell Helm and Shell Armor. Climb back up to B2, then take the right hole for a Serpent Sword before dropping through the next hole to B3.

Equip all three on your Warrior once you’re back to full size. The Serpent Sword is a flat upgrade over Mythril Sword and deals Lightning damage. Shell Helm and Shell Armor are flat Defense upgrades over the Mythril line. If you’re low on MP after collecting the bestiary entries, leave the temple to rest at the cove’s healing spring; you can come back without losing progress. Otherwise, follow B3 south to reach the Giant Rat.

How to Beat Giant Rat

The Giant Rat drops the Nepto Eye, the first of the chapter’s two story-required quest items.

The Nepto Eye, recovered from the Giant Rat.

Backtrack out of the temple, cast Mini again to return to full size, and walk back to the dragon statue at the entrance. Place the Eye in the empty socket and the dragon hands over the Fang of Water. The seas calm down.

The Fang of Water, the chapter's second story-required item.

Switch your party back to your preferred jobs, save, and sail the Enterprise out of the bay. The next destination is Tower of Owen to the north. Keep an eye on the open sea while sailing; a few enemies only spawn in this stretch of water and disappear later.
