Canaan & Dragon's Peak
Ram the boulder west of Kazus with the Mythril Ram to open the path through the mountains. The airship crash-lands on the far side and you continue to Canaan on foot. This chapter covers Canaan, Cid’s old airship hangar, and Dragon’s Peak for 15 chests, 3 items, and 7 new bestiary entries.
Three new enemies spawn along the path from the crash site to Canaan. Walk all three until they register.
New Enemies
All three are basic Fight-only swingers with no special moves. Bugbear swings the hardest (20 ATK) and Mandrake is the sturdiest (120 HP). Mandrake folds to Fire spells but resists Ice and Water, so save your Blizzards and Antarctic Winds for other fights. Despite the name, Basilisk has no petrify attack and is the safest of the three.
Canaan
Shops
Cid leaves your party the moment you enter town. Three hidden items wait in the houses, twelve chests sit in Cid’s old airship hangar, and the shops sell the first batch of Lv2 Black Magic. Loot everything before you spend any Gil.
From the entrance, enter the building on the left. The room with two beds has a bookshelf along the wall; walk straight through the gap on its left side to find a hidden path that loops back to a chest with a Gold Needle. On the way out, check the pot next to the fireplace for a Mallet. The Mallet is a single-use item that mirrors the Mini spell, useful as a panic button if Mini runs out of charges.
Leave the building and walk northeast toward the magic shop. Just above it, stairs lead down into the water. Follow the path through the waterfall (each step costs 1 HP per character) to a small patch of land at the southeast edge of town. The chest there holds an Elixir.
Cid’s house sits in the northwest corner of town. His wife is bedridden inside. Give her the Elixir and she’ll recover.
Speak to Cid afterward and he’ll step away from the wall behind him. Interact with the candle he was blocking to slide open a hidden passage to his old airship hangar.
The hangar floor has 8 chests in plain sight: Potion, Great Bow, two Gnomish Bread, Iron Arrow, Blind, Gold Needle, and Phoenix Down. Equip the Great Bow on a back-row Warrior, Red Mage, Black Mage, or Ranger with the Iron Arrow stacked underneath for the strongest ranged option you have right now.
Take the stairs on the left side of the hangar and walk through the wall at the bottom to reach a small secret room with four more chests: Potion, Hi-Potion, Gold Needle, and Phoenix Down.
All 15 chests and 3 hidden items collected. Backtrack to the shops to spend what you’ve saved:
- Weapon shop: skip the Great Bow and Iron Arrow; both dropped in the hangar.
- Armor shop: skip if you already bought the Mythril line in Kazus.
- Magic shop:
- Thunder (Lv2 Black Magic, 700 Gil): buy immediately for your Black Mage, your strongest single-target damage spell.
- Poison (700 Gil): solid damage-over-time option for longer boss fights.
- Blind (700 Gil): skip, the spell already dropped from the hangar chest.
- Item shop: first place that sells Echo Herbs (100 Gil) for silence cure; grab a couple to round out your status kit.
Once you’ve stocked up, exit south through the gate and follow the path to the mountain entrance.
Dragon’s Peak
Every enemy on the peak is a flyer weak to Wind, so the Aero chest in the middle of the climb (picked up below) clears any flock in one cast. Firefly also has an Ice weakness if your Black Mage wants to chip in with Blizzard. Helldiver and Rust Bird have single-item drop tables (Gold Needle and Phoenix Down respectively), but per-kill drop rates are 1-2%, so just take what comes. Register all four before the boss area for the Field Research trophy chain.
The first section is linear. When you hit a fork, take the long stairs going down for a Gold Needle.
Climb back to the fork and continue north to a second split. Go north for Aero, the Lv2 White Magic spell that gives your White Mage real offensive damage; use the scroll on her from the menu and it’s available next battle. Cut west at the same fork for the last Gold Needle, then take the stairs up to the peak.
Bahamut at Dragon’s Aerie
At the top of the mountain, look for a rustling patch of hay on the left side of the dragon nest. Interact with it to reveal Desch. Bahamut returns to the aerie a moment later and attacks immediately.
You cannot win this fight. Mega Flare wipes the entire party in a single hit and Bahamut’s 25,000 HP is uncatchable with your current gear. Select Flee on your first turn from every character; the escape goes through immediately and the cutscene resumes from there.
After the escape, Desch joins as a guest and hands your White Mage the Mini spell. The party jumps off the peak and lands on a small peninsula south of Canaan, locked off from the rest of the world by mountains until you find another path. Walk south along the coast to reach Tozus.
