Salamand & Semitt Falls

10 New Enemies 10 Chests

Minwu’s in your party and you’ve got the Canoe. Time to chase down the Mythril Hilda asked for. This chapter takes you through Paloom, Poft, Salamand, and the 5-floor Semitt Falls dungeon for 10 chests and 10 new bestiary entries.

From Altair, walk north past the bridge and paddle the Canoe straight across the water. Paloom sits east of where you land.

Paloom

Paloom’s a small coastal port; pirates run the docks and book passage to Poft. The shops are worth a stop before you board.

Shops

The magic shop carries Blink, Protect, and Shell. Buy Protect immediately. It raises Defense and you’ll cast it in most boss fights from here on; Blink is the other defensive workhorse if you have spare Gil. The Copper Cuirass in the armor shop is a cheap defensive upgrade worth grabbing for your frontliners.

At the entrance a pirate offers ship passage to Poft for 32 Gil. Pay him, walk south to the docks, and board.

Pay the pirate 32 Gil to sail to Poft.

Poft

The ship drops you in Poft. Walk left to the pub and find the white-haired man at the table; that’s Cid, the airship engineer. Ask him about Airship and he’ll point to the booking agent on his right. Pay 200 Gil to fly straight to Salamand, or walk northwest if you’d rather grind.

Cid in Poft's pub.

Walking lets you fight Vampire Thorns and Queen Bees on the overworld. Vampire Thorns can poison (Antidotes are stocked in Salamand), and Queen Bees swing for solid damage. Either way, Minwu handles healing for the party.

Salamand

Salamand’s a mining town under Imperial occupation. All four shop types are open, so gear up before going into Semitt Falls.

Shops

The magic shop sells Life, Teleport, Sap, and Warp at 1,000 Gil each. Skip Teleport entirely; there’s a free Teleport Tome in a Semitt Falls chest. Life is worth buying if you can afford it. The others can wait. Pick up the Longsword and Battle Axe if you have spare Gil and a character whose proficiency matches.

Once geared up, make for the house in the northeast corner and speak to Josef. Ask him about Mythril and Wild Rose. He recognises you as rebels and tasks you with reclaiming the Mythril from Semitt Falls.

Josef's house, northeast corner of Salamand.

Leave Salamand and push south, then west. Use the Canoe to cross the lake. Loop around the mountains to the left, hugging them as you push north until you hit an opening, then take the waterway to the right to find the cave entrance.

Semitt Falls

Semitt Falls is five floors deep with a mini-boss on B5 and the chapter boss at the end. Both make physical attacks unreliable: Land Turtle through high defense, Sergeant through evasion. Save MP for them.

A few standard enemies deserve attention along the way: Green Slimes have very high defense, so physical attacks barely hurt them; use Fire instead. Balloons self-destruct if you don’t kill them quickly. Soldiers are the toughest standard enemy here and often appear alongside weaker enemies.

B1 (2 chests). Take the stairs down and go left. Grab the 200 Gil chest in the top left and the 400 Gil chest in the bottom right. Exit through the bottom-left door.

B2 (3 chests). Eye Drops top left, Hi-Potion middle top, Potion bottom right. Continue north until you reach the four doors. Take the first door on the left. The other three are dead ends.

B3 (2 chests). Pick up 200 Gil in the bottom right and 250 Gil on the left. When you reach the three doors in the northeast, take the leftmost one.

Speak with Paul inside the door and he’ll escort the trapped miners and Nellie to safety. Continue down the stairs.

Paul takes the miners and Nellie out of the dungeon.

B4 (1 chest). Go left and cross the bridge. The Fire Tome chest sits in the top left. From there, go right to the central platform where four bridges connect, take the bridge up, then follow the outer edge right and down to B5.

Fire Tome - Semitt Falls B4, top left (12/234)

B5 (2 chests, one post-boss). Cross the long bridge to the left, then follow the path up and right toward the chest in the top right. Skip the door on the left for now. Opening the chest triggers the Land Turtle fight.

Teleport Tome - Semitt Falls B5 (13/234). Opening the chest triggers Land Turtle.

How to Beat Land Turtle

The chest behind it holds the Teleport Tome. Teach it to one of your mages if you skipped buying it in Salamand. Head back across the long bridge, then up and through the left door. Sergeant stands directly ahead, guarding the Mythril.

The Sergeant guards the Mythril.

How to Beat Sergeant

Once Sergeant goes down, open the chest behind him for the Mythril. Use Teleport to warp out; Minwu already knows it if nobody else has learned it. Sergeant can also drop a piece of Mythril gear, so check your inventory after the fight.

Mythril - Semitt Falls B5 (14/234).

Delivering the Mythril

Canoe back down the river from the dungeon entrance and loop above the mountains. Rest at Salamand’s Inn if MP is low. Once Salamand sits to the north, walk southeast to Poft, talk to Cid’s assistant in the pub, and book passage to Altair.

Return to Altair

Shops

Back in Altair, go to the weapon shop and speak to Tobul, the blacksmith inside. Hand over the Mythril. New Mythril vendors set up alongside the existing weapon and armor merchants, so you’ll see both the original and Mythril stock side by side.

Tobul forges Mythril gear after you hand him the ore.

Buy Mythril weapons that match each character’s lane: Mythril Sword for Firion, Mythril Knife for Maria (low Magic Interference so her spells stay strong). Guy doesn’t have a Mythril option; pick up the Battle Axe (250G) when you pass through Salamand. Skip extra weapons for Minwu since he leaves at the end of the next dungeon.

Before the next chapter, make sure:

  • Mythril Sword on Firion, Mythril Knife on Maria, Battle Axe on Guy
  • One party member has Teleport learned (Minwu counts)
  • You’re stocked on Potions, Antidotes, and Phoenix Downs
  • Cure cast every battle to keep its level climbing
