Final Fantasy 2 Pixel Remaster has no class restrictions on armor, so any character can equip anything from heavy plate to lightweight robes. But heavy armor carries a steep magic penalty, so you'll want to keep your casters in lighter gear. For a full breakdown of how stats grow, check the leveling guide.
Body armor
Body armor is your main source of raw defense. Early on, you'll rely on Leather Armor and Copper Cuirass from shops in Altair and Salamand. Upgrades come steadily through the midgame, with Mythril and Gold options available once you reach Mysidia.
Genji Armor is the strongest in the game (found in Pandaemonium). For mages, the White Robe and Black Robe from Cave of Mysidia are the clear picks; they boost their respective magic types without any defense penalty. And heavy armor doesn't just lower magic power slightly. It can cut spell damage by half or more, so don't throw plate mail on a character who's been casting Fire all game.

Shields
Shields go in the off-hand and provide both defense and evasion. Here's the thing most players miss: the evasion bonus is multiplied by your shield skill level. That means a leveled shield user dodges far more often than the stats suggest. It's one of FF2's most powerful mechanics once you've put the time in.
Aegis Shield (Pandaemonium) is the best overall; Ice Shield can be bought in Mysidia and absorbs fire damage, which is invaluable against flame-heavy bosses. But shields carry a 70% magic penalty, so mages should skip them entirely. Pair your frontline fighters with shields and let your casters go two-handed or dual-wield weapons instead.
| Armor | DEF | EVA | M.Int | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Buckler | 1 | 8 | 70 | 50 Gil |

Helms
Head protection ranges from simple Leather Caps to the powerful Genji Helm. Most helms are straightforward defense upgrades, but two stand out. The Ribbon has low defense and it won't win any beauty contests in the stats column, but it grants complete immunity to status ailments, which makes it essential for Pandaemonium (where enemies love throwing around Stun, Curse, and worse). The Gold Hairpin is the best mage option; it provides decent magic defense without hurting spell output.
| Armor | DEF | EVA | M.Int | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leather Cap | 1 | 5 | 2 | 50 Gil |
| Bronze Helm | 2 | 5 | 8 | 150 Gil |
| Ribbon | 3 | Treasure | ||
| Mythril Helm | 4 | 10 | 8 | 300 Gil |
| Giant's Helm | 6 | 10 | Treasure | |
| Flame Helm | 18 | Treasure | ||
| Diamond Helm | 25 | Treasure | ||
| Genji Helm | 35 | Treasure |
Gloves
Hand armor tends to get overlooked, but it shouldn't be. Genji Gloves have the highest defense of any glove in the game. Thief's Gloves from Castle Fynn improve item drop rates, making them useful for bestiary farming runs even if their defense is mediocre. You'll find decent glove upgrades scattered through the walkthrough chapters, so don't forget to check chests in dungeons you might otherwise rush through.
| Armor | DEF | EVA | M.Int | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leather Gloves | 1 | 5 | 4 | 30 Gil |
| Bronze Gloves | 2 | 10 | 70 | 150 Gil |
| Mythril Gloves | 6 | 10 | 24 | 500 Gil |
| Thief's Gloves | 15 | 10 | 40 | 1,000 Gil |

| Diamond Gloves | 15 | Treasure | ||
| Genji Gloves | 22 | Treasure |
Accessories
Special equipment with unique effects. The Elven Cloak boosts evasion, the Power Armlet increases attack power, and the Protect Ring reduces all incoming damage. These don't follow the same rules as standard armor; they won't penalize your magic stat, so casters can equip them freely.
| Armor | DEF | EVA | M.Int | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Protect Ring | 10 | 10,000 Gil |
