Final Fantasy 2 - Passwords

Final Fantasy 2 Pixel Remaster uses a keyword system instead of quest logs. NPCs speak key words in red text, your party learns them automatically, and you can ask other NPCs about them to unlock new dialogue and story triggers.

To use a keyword, open the menu and select a party member. Choose Ask, then pick a keyword from your list. The NPC will respond if they know anything about it. Most keywords only matter to one or two specific characters, but experimenting won't cost you anything (and the game never punishes wrong guesses). Some keywords exist purely for story flavor; others gate entire quest lines.

All 15 keywords are listed below in story order. You'll pick up most of them automatically from Hilda at rebel HQ in Altair, though a few come from Gordon, Cid, and the King of Kashuan. Check the walkthrough for the exact moment each one becomes available.

Missable keywords

Four keywords can be permanently lost if you advance the story past their window. Dragoons and Ultima Tome disappear early enough that you might not realize what you've missed. Cyclone and Palamecia vanish later, but Cyclone is the most painful to lose because asking Paul about it in Fynn unlocks 8 treasure chests, including the Blood Sword. That single weapon trivializes both final boss fights.
