Altair & Fynn
The Empire has overrun Fynn. Four Black Knights beat your party in an unwinnable opening fight; keep attacking until you lose, and Firion wakes up alone in Altair. This chapter takes you through Altair, Gatrea, and occupied Fynn for 4 chests, 3 new enemies, 4 new keywords, and 2 missables.
Before You Begin
A few things to note about this walkthrough before you set out:
- This guide tracks 100% completion: 128 bestiary entries, 234 chests, 15 keywords, 27 locations, and all 28 trophies. Trophies and achievements are identical across PlayStation, Switch, Steam, iOS, and Android.
- Boost mode lives under the in-game menu (Configuration tab) and gives you six toggles for encounter rate, Gil, skill progression, attributes, and HP. None of them void trophies, so dial them to whatever feels right. The tips page has each toggle broken down.
- Seven trophies are missable. This walkthrough flags each missable chest, enemy, keyword, and location at the moment it shows up. The missables page has the full list.
- FF2 has no EXP. Stats grow from use: swing a sword to raise Strength, take hits to raise max HP, cast spells to raise Magic. Pick one weapon per character and one main spell per caster, then stick with both for the whole run. The leveling page has the deep mechanics.
Altair
Shops
You wake up in Altair with Leon missing. Exit the room and walk into the throne room next door. FF2’s dialogue runs on a Key Term system: when an NPC mentions an important term you can Learn it to add it to your list, then Ask anyone about it later to unlock new conversations. Talk to Hilda and she’ll drop your first Key Term, Wild Rose. Ask her about it, then Learn it.
Before leaving the hideout, go downstairs and grab the Potion chest on the left side of the red carpet room. The hideout becomes inaccessible later in the game, so this is your only window. Once you have it, leave the hideout through the southern exit, then exit Altair through the west gate to reach the plains outside.
New Enemies
Leg Eaters, Hornets, and Goblins all die in one hit. Leg Eaters and Hornets drop 4-9 Gil; Goblins drop 9-18. Attack with the same weapon every turn and have your caster cast something each fight; proficiency comes from use, not from damage dealt. Once you’ve killed enemies for a few minutes to build skill levels and earn Gil, return to town for the shops.
Gatrea
Shops
Talk to the boy and he’ll mention a pub in Fynn. Rest at the Inn before heading out; Fynn doesn’t have one. While you’re here, grab Guy an Axe to start his weapon lane.
Fynn
From Gatrea, go around the lake above you until you see Fynn. Enter the town, not the castle.
Fynn is occupied. Soldiers trigger unwinnable fights if you talk to them, so weave around. Sprinters (30 HP) can spawn on the streets but aren’t worth fighting yet; they’re common next chapter. Walk north to the top of town, and when you reach the grass take a right and hug the wall until you reach the pub.
Inside the pub, talk to the bartender on the top right and ask him about Wild Rose. He’ll recognize you as a rebel and reveal a hidden passage behind the bar.
Follow the path and open the three Potion chests.
The wounded soldier at the back is Scott, Prince of Kashuan. Ask him about Wild Rose and he’ll hand over his Ring for you to take back to Hilda.
Reporting Back to Altair
Leave Fynn, retrace your steps to Altair, and visit Hilda in the rebel hideout. Show her the Ring. She gives you your first mission: track down Mythril for new weapons by finding a man named Josef in Salamand. Learn the Mythril keyword. Then talk to Minwu, who joins as a guest character and hands over a Canoe for crossing shallow water. Speak with Hilda one more time for two more keywords: Dreadnought and Airship.
Before heading out, confirm Maria has Cure equipped and stock 2-3 Antidotes from the Altair item shop. The next chapter takes you north to Salamand and into Semitt Falls.
