Missables Guide - Final Fantasy 2

Final Fantasy 2 Pixel Remaster has a lot of missable content. Four temporary dungeons (Dreadnought, Leviathan, Cyclone, Castle Palamecia) seal permanently after their story events. Four Key Terms expire if you push the story past their windows. The overworld encounter table swaps after the Cyclone event, removing dozens of enemies from the world map pool. And the Blood Sword sits behind a door that closes forever once you board the Cyclone.

Use this checklist alongside the walkthrough to make sure nothing slips past you on a 100% run.

Blood Sword

The Blood Sword sits behind a locked side door in Paul’s house in Fynn. The door opens only after you ask Paul about the Cyclone Key Term, and it seals for good once you enter the Cyclone for the final assault. The sword drains HP on every hit and ignores most defense, which makes the Emperor fight significantly easier.

See the key items page for the full timing window.

Missable Key Terms

Four Key Terms vanish if you advance the story past their window. Two of them gate big rewards. See the Key Terms page for the full list and where to ask each one.

DragoonsAsk the Dragoon’s wife in Castle Deist for the ExcaliburCompleting Deist Cavern
Ultima TomeRequired to learn Ultima magic laterGetting the White Mask in Castle Fynn

The Cyclone Key Term is especially important: asking Paul in Fynn unlocks the secret door to the Blood Sword and 7 other chests. The Memory Lane gold trophy also requires learning all 15 Key Terms in their windows.

Four One-Time Dungeons

These dungeons collapse permanently at the end of their chapters. Every chest and bestiary entry inside has to be cleared in a single visit.

Dreadnought (10 chests)

The Dreadnought crashes into the ocean at the end of the chapter. All 10 chests and the Helldiver bestiary entry vanish with it.

The Dreadnought lands northwest of Altair.

Chests: 1F Sleep Blade + 600 Gil; 2F Hi-Potion, Potion, Dark Bow, Thief’s Gloves; 4F Trident, Main Gauche, Ice Shield, Giant’s Helm.

Walkthrough: Dreadnought chapter.

Leviathan (5 chests)

Sailing toward the Mysidian Tower triggers a cutscene where the sea monster Leviathan swallows your ship. You can’t return after escaping. All 5 chests and 3 random encounter enemies (Bolt Fish, Sea Dragon, Manta Ray) are permanently missable.

Chests: Twist Headband, Power Sash, Power Armlet, Gaia Blade, Diamond Shield.

Walkthrough: Leviathan chapter.

Cyclone (7 chests)

The Cyclone is destroyed in the Emperor’s defeat scene. All 7 chests and any unique enemies inside disappear.

Chests: Ripper, Poison Axe, Diamond Gloves, Diamond Helm, Defender, Diamond Armor (monster ambush), Wind Flute (monster ambush).

Castle Palamecia (17 chests)

After the Emperor’s revival in Pandaemonium, Castle Palamecia is permanently sealed. All 17 chests and the unique castle bestiary entries are locked out.

Castle Palamecia, the Emperor's stronghold.

Includes the Diamond Cuirass, Hourglass, Garlic, Ether, Buckler, Thunder Spear (monster ambush), Saint’s Spirit, Sleepgrass, Mage’s Staff, Healing Staff, Wizard’s Staff, Sun Blade (monster ambush), Elixir × 3, Hellfire, and Wind Flute.

Missable Bestiary Entries

Sixteen enemies are permanently locked once you hit specific story events. They split into two groups based on what locks them out.

Temporary dungeons (10)

These only appear inside the dungeons that seal permanently. Helldiver also has rare overworld spawns pre-Cyclone, but inside Dreadnought is the reliable place to log one.

Pre-Cyclone overworld (6)

The overworld encounter table swaps after the Cyclone event. Many enemies disappear from the world map at that point, but most still spawn in dungeons. These six are different: they have no dungeon spawn anywhere, so the overworld is your only window.

The sea trio has the narrowest window. Don’t flee from any of them.

For the full bestiary with sprite, stats, and rewards on each missable, see the bestiary page.

Log every overworld missable before the Cyclone: Phorusracos, Antlion, Land Ray, Killer Fish, Buccaneer, and Sea Snake all stop spawning once the Cyclone event fires. The Cyclone chapter has a dedicated Last Chance Bestiary section with the best spawn spots if you’re missing any.

Locations

Adventurous Wayfarer is a Gold trophy that needs all 27 locations entered at least once. Most flag automatically as you walk into them during the walkthrough, but three are easy to skip.

Gatrea

The town becomes permanently inaccessible later in the story. Step inside during the Altair & Fynn chapter so the location flags toward the trophy.

Gatrea sits between Altair and Fynn.

Rebel Camp

The camp disappears once the rebellion moves to Castle Fynn after liberation. Walk in during the Castle Fynn chapter; this is the easiest location to miss.

The Rebel Camp, before the rebels relocate to Castle Fynn.

Chocobo Forest

Hidden in a circular hole at the bottom of the forest south of Kashuan Keep. It stays accessible the whole game but is easy to forget.
