The Masamune!

Back at the End of Time, fight Spekkio if you've reached a new level bracket (1-9, 10-19, 20-29, etc.) before continuing. Your next stop is Medina Village in 1000 A.D. to have Melchior reforge the sword; then it's off to 600 A.D. to deliver it to Frog.

Reforging the Masamune

Warp to Medina Village and head southwest to Melchior's Cabin. Show him the Broken Blade and Dreamstone; he agrees to repair the legendary sword. If Lucca is in your party, she helps with the reforging. Otherwise, Robo fills in.

Head downstairs and wait while Melchior works. When he finishes, you receive the Masamune - finally complete. Talk to Gaspar at the End of Time if you want; he'll comment on the sword. Note that Guardia Castle in 1000 A.D. is still inaccessible, so there's nothing else to do in the present.

Delivering the Sword

Warp to Truce Canyon (600 A.D.) and make your way to the Cursed Woods south of Porre. Head north through the woods, fighting Gremlins along the way. At the northernmost point, go behind the rustling bush and climb down into Frog's hideout.

Frog's past. Present the Masamune to Frog. He considers joining your quest, then asks you to stay the night. A flashback reveals Glenn and Cyrus's encounter with Magus years ago - you'll learn how Glenn became Frog and why he seeks vengeance.

Frog joins. When morning comes, Frog decides to confront Magus. He permanently joins your party; Crono and Frog must remain in the active party for now. Choose Lucca or Robo as your third member.

Preparing Frog

Learning magic. This step is vital: take Frog to Spekkio at the End of Time immediately. Without Water magic, Frog can only use two Techs total - a massive handicap. Warp back through Truce Canyon, visit Spekkio's room (north door), and introduce Frog. Spekkio teaches him Water magic. Fight Spekkio to practice if you want; winning is optional.

Equipment upgrades. Frog's starting armor is outdated. Warp to 65,000,000 B.C. and visit the Trading Hut in Ioka Village to get him better gear using Petals, Fangs, Horns, and Feathers.

Taban Helm. While preparing, stop by Lucca's House in 1000 A.D. and talk to Taban. He gives you the Taban Helm for Lucca - a nice defensive upgrade.

Magic Cave

Return to 600 A.D. via Truce Canyon. Head southwest across Zenan Bridge, then east past Fiona's Villa. You'll find a smaller mountain formation: the Magic Cave. Save in the overworld and enter.

Opening the seal. Frog has another flashback at the entrance. Afterward, he raises the Masamune and cuts through the rock wall, breaking the seal. Your party enters automatically.

Cave navigation. Head east and north, defeating Bats and Gremlins as you go. A pack of Gremlins flees deeper into the cave; chase them down and defeat them at the dead end. Continue north and climb the steps. Note the sealed chest along the way - you can't open it yet, but remember its location for later.

Soldier's warning. At the top of the steps, check the fallen soldier. His note warns about a creature called the Juggler in Fiendlord's Keep that raises its guard when attacked - useful intel for the next dungeon.

A small bat follows you through the cave; it's harmless. Exit north to emerge on an island near Magus's castle. Use a Shelter, save your game, then approach Fiendlord's Keep. The next chapter covers the castle in full.
