Tata and the Frog
This chapter begins when you encounter Tata at the Denadoro Mountains entrance. Make sure Lucca is in your party - you'll need her to burn the Ogans' hammers or they become much stronger.
Denadoro Mountains
Lower section. Before heading up the first ladder, walk into the water on the right. This hidden passageway leads to a chest tucked under branches containing Mirage Hand (Robo's weapon). Return and climb the ladder. Head through the south exit to grab a Revive from a chest you saw earlier.
The next areas are fairly linear. Fight all the monsters to level up; watch for Free Lancers throwing rocks that actually deal damage. Go west from the sleeping Goblin to get an Ether. Head north over the first bridge, but don't cross the second yet - grab 500G from the chest to the north first.
Mid section. The next scene has four chests: Revive, Mid-Ether, Mid-Potion, and Gold Helm. Continue to the next area and grab another Mid-Ether on the way. Get 600G and proceed to a cliff where you fight four consecutive groups of monsters. Have Lucca burn the Ogans' hammers; heal with Aura Whirl between fights.
Waterfall area. After one brief fight, you'll see you can jump down the river via the center or bottom left. Take the bottom left path to reach ledges with two excellent items: Silver Stud (cuts MP use by 50%) and Silver Earring (raises max HP by 25%). You'll loop back to the waterfall area.
Grab 300G and a Mid-Potion. You can talk to the Free Lancer if you want; you'll fight him either way. Get the Mid-Ether near the exit before leaving. The next area has a Kilwala who gives you a Magic Tab if you talk to him 4 times.
Upper section. After the save point, go down the ladder for a Mid-Ether. Check the bottom left area for an easily missed Speed Tab. Head right; don't jump down yet - look for a hidden chest with a Gold Suit. Continue down the ladder, grab a Shelter, then climb up to find the boss cave. Make sure your MP is high before entering.
Boss: Masa & Mune
Masa & Mune
Two brothers who guard the Masamune. They fight together and can counter-attack with an X-Strike if you target the wrong one.
- Target Mune (purple collar, on the left) - attacking Masa triggers X-Strike counter
- Alternatively, use Lucca's Hypno Wave first turn to sleep one brother
- While one is asleep, attack the other freely with no counters
- Once one brother falls, the fight moves to phase 2
- Use Mid-Potions if no one has healing magic
After defeating them, a message appears: "Apart, Masa & Mune are powerless." The brothers fuse together to form the Masamune - the real fight begins.
Masamune
The fused form has high HP and devastating attacks. When he stores energy for a tornado attack, you must counter correctly or take massive damage.
- Use your best Techs: Fire Sword, Ice Sword, Ice Tackle, Robo Tackle
- Regular attacks are a waste of turns - this boss has 3600 HP
- When you see "Storing tornado energy", have Crono use Slash to neutralize it
- Attacking with anything else during storage triggers a nasty counter
- Keep healing - the tornado attack deals ~120 damage to everyone if not neutralized
- Bring Ethers; you'll need MP throughout
The Broken Masamune
After defeating the boss, you receive the Broken Sword and ride the wind down to the mountain base.
Tata's House. Head south to Porre and find Tata's house. Talk to him to learn the truth - he's not actually the legendary hero. He found the badge but doesn't deserve it. He gives you the Hero Medal. Rest at the inn since the game doesn't restore your health after boss fights.
Cursed Woods. Return to the Cursed Woods and climb down to Frog's hideout. Show him the Hero Medal. He's moved by your faith in him and gives you the Broken Hilt of the Masamune. He mentions the sword was made by Melchior, a man living in 1000 A.D. near Medina Village.
Melchior's Cabin. Go through the time gate in Truce Canyon to the End of Time, then take the portal to Medina Village. Head to Melchior's Cabin southwest of the village. Show him the broken sword pieces. He can reforge it, but needs Dreamstone - a rare red rock that hasn't existed for millions of years.
Sounds like you need to travel to the distant past. Return to the End of Time and take the pillar leading to 65,000,000 B.C.
