Northern Ruins

This quest takes you to the southeast continent you couldn't reach before the flying Epoch. You'll clear a haunted ruin, lay Frog's friend Cyrus to rest, upgrade the Masamune, and finish off the last sealed chests. Keep Frog in your party throughout - he's required for the Masamune upgrade and has unique dialogue.

Quest Overview

  • Time Periods: 600 A.D., 1000 A.D.
  • Bosses: None (regular enemies only)
  • Key Items: Upgraded Masamune, Gold Rock, sealed chest equipment
  • Character Required: Frog (for Masamune upgrade and Gold Rock)
  • Gaspar's Hint: "There's the ghost of a lofty knight, slain by Magus in the Middle Ages, who haunts the present..."

Meeting the Ghost

1000 A.D. Fly to Choras in the southeast corner of the map. With Frog in your party, head to the Northern Ruins north of town. Inside, you'll meet a surly ghost who seems to recognize Frog. The ghost is technically invincible - non-elemental attacks like Tail Spin or Poyozo Dance can damage it, but it won't die. Talk to the villagers in town; they mention the place has been in ruins for years. Head back to 600 A.D.

Getting the Tools

600 A.D. Enter the Northern Ruins and go down the left path. You'll need to clear out monsters to proceed. Before you continue with the quest, there's an opportunity to farm here.

600 A.D. Go to the Café in Choras and talk to the man drinking soda. He says his tools were stolen and he can't work.

1000 A.D. Visit the same Café. The soda-drinking man says you can have his tools, but his wife has them. Go to his house nearby and get the Tools from his wife.

600 A.D. Return and give the tools to the man in the Café. He rushes off to work. Go to his house (same location as in 1000 A.D.) and talk to him - he'll rally his crew and head to the Northern Ruins.

Clearing the Ruins

Enter the Northern Ruins in 600 A.D. The carpenters report monsters blocked their progress.

Enemy tips. Most monsters here are only affected by magic and are weak to fire. Non-elemental techs like Ayla's Tail Spin also work. Enemies sometimes cast MP Buster, so rest at the inn between attempts. Note: Base and Defunct enemies can fuse into a Departed if you give them time - kill them quickly.

Clear all enemies in the ruins, then return to Choras and pay the carpenter 2,000 G at his house.

Upgrading the Masamune

Put Frog in your party and re-enter the Northern Ruins. The workers couldn't finish due to more monsters. Go down the left stairwell and continue through until you reach a gravestone.

Cyrus's Grave. Have Frog interact with the grave. A scene plays between Frog and Cyrus - their shared history, Cyrus's death at Magus's hands, Glenn's transformation into Frog. Cyrus finally rests in peace, and the Masamune upgrades automatically into its ultimate form.

Clear any remaining enemies, then pay the carpenters another 2,000 G for final repairs.

Collecting All Items

600 A.D. - Examine sealed chests. Return to the fully repaired ruins. Go east and upstairs; the floor holes are now fixed. Find the three sealed chests (one in the right room, two in the north area). Examine each but decline to open. Ignore normal chests for now.

1000 A.D. - Open everything. Warp to 1000 A.D. and enter the ruins (now called Hero's Grave). Open all three sealed chests for the upgraded items:

  • Valkyrie Bow - Marle's ultimate weapon (upgraded from Siren's Kiss)
  • Suzaku - Crono weapon, 4x damage on critical hits (upgraded from Onimaru)
  • Moonbeam Armor - Raises magic defense by 10 (upgraded from Nova Armor)

Also open the two normal chests (Turbo Ether and Elixir).

600 A.D. - Claim base items. Return and open all five chests:

  • Siren's Kiss (base version of Valkyrie Bow)
  • Onimaru (base version of Suzaku)
  • Nova Armor (base version of Moonbeam Armor)
  • Turbo Ether (second copy)
  • Elixir (second copy)

The Gold Rock

One more thing with Frog and the upgraded Masamune. Head to Denadoro Mountains in 600 A.D. Put Frog at the front of your party and climb further up the mountain until you find a Free Lancer throwing rocks at you from across a waterfall (you won't be in battle with him).

Have Frog catch one of the rocks. It turns out to be the Gold Rock, which unlocks Grand Dream - a Triple Tech for Frog, Marle, and Robo.
