Dimensional Vortex
The Dimensional Vortex is a post-game dungeon that appears after beating Lavos at least once. Three new gates open in 12,000 B.C., 1000 A.D., and 2300 A.D. Each leads to a remixed dungeon ending with a "shade" boss that permanently upgrades one character. Complete all three to unlock the Dream Devourer, the true final boss, and a new ending that connects to Chrono Cross.
Overview
Access. Beat Lavos and save after the credits when prompted. Load your save (or start New Game+) and three new gates appear on the world map. You can tackle them in any order.
Structure. Each vortex starts with a unique entrance area, then dumps you into randomized rooms from familiar dungeons. You'll reach a save room with two warps: one exits, one continues. The final area is unique to that era and ends with a shade boss fight.
- 12,000 B.C. (Antiquity): Marle required. Rewards: +5 Accuracy, +2 Speed, +5 Stamina
- 1000 A.D. (Present): Crono required. Rewards: +3 Strength, +5 Accuracy, +1 Speed
- 2300 A.D. (Future): Lucca required. Rewards: +3 Speed, +5 Magic, +5 Stamina
Antiquity Vortex (12,000 B.C.)
Entrance and randomized rooms. Head south at the start and take the eastern path. There's a hidden passage southeast with an Angel's Tiara. Continue south through the randomized dungeon sections until you reach a cave with three paths. Save at the eastern save point. Take the northern warp to continue.
Singing Mountain. This area plays the unreleased "Singing Mountain" track from the original soundtrack. Climb the cliffs and grab chests: Megalixir (west ledge after defeating a Chaos Mage), Lapis (behind a tree), Hi-Potion (climb down the southern wall). The special enemy here is Snowbeast, a Heckran-like creature.
Sliding section. When you reach the sliding area, hold Up to stop yourself. Move side to side while holding Up to land on specific ledges. Northwest ledge has a Shadowplume Robe and Elixir. Far east ledge has a hidden cave with the Venus Bow, plus a Megalixir and Turbo Ether down the southwest passage. At the bottom, grab a Hi-Ether and head east.
Open area. Sparkling spots on the ground contain items: Magic Capsule, Speed Capsule, Strength Capsule. Chests have a Regal Gown, Athenian Water, and Elixir. Follow the path to the peak and enter the warp. Save, then continue north with Marle in your party.
Alabaster Shade
A Marle look-alike. She wears a Haste Helm, so she acts faster than your party. Nasty.
- Uses Marle's techs: Barrage, Icefall (Ice II), Recuperate
- Charm the Haste Helm with Ayla; it won't change her stats but it's free gear
- Equip Blue Mail/Plate to absorb Water damage; then you only worry about physical hits
- After defeating her, she merges with Marle
Marle's boost: +5 Accuracy, +2 Speed, +5 Stamina (permanent).
Present Vortex (1000 A.D.)
Entrance. Follow the path through a large volcano dungeon. This area is a recreation of an unreleased dungeon from the original development. The special enemy is Red Ghul. Head northeast through the randomized rooms until you reach the cross-shaped save room. Take the northern warp.
Cave system. Lava blocks some paths. Navigate around to find chests: Athenian Water and Master's Crown (western room), Strength Capsule (hidden southwest path), Dreamreaper (hidden southeast path at the peak), Spellslinger (hidden southeast passage near Fireballs).
Ladder maze and lava draining. Climb up and down ladders. Grab a Strength Capsule (west ladder after the first split) and an Elixir (southeast ladder). Hit wall switches to drain lava and open new paths. Collect a Hi-Potion after draining, then enter the warp at the far end.
Once-King Dalton
Dalton's back. Still pretty easy despite his bluster.
- Uses all four elements: Iron Sphere, Gale Slash, Deep Freeze, Plasma, Nether Blast
- Counters with MP Buster when low on HP
- When you kill him, he hits everyone with Violent Belch; keep HP up
- After defeat, he rants about raising an army in Porre (a Chrono Cross reference)
Continue north after Dalton vanishes. Save, then proceed with Crono in your party.
Steel Shade
A Crono look-alike wearing Prism Spectacles. That means multiplied damage. Really nasty.
- Uses Crono's techs: Gash (Wind Slash), Rend (Cleave), Thunderfall (Lightning II), Scintillation (Luminaire)
- Charm the Prism Spectacles with Ayla; very rare accessory
- Equip White Mail/Plate to absorb Lightning and nullify most of his magic
- After defeat, he merges with Crono
Crono's boost: +3 Strength, +5 Accuracy, +1 Speed (permanent).
Future Vortex (2300 A.D.)
Randomized rooms and conveyor factory. Pass through the familiar dome areas until you reach the save room. Take the northern warp. Navigate conveyor belts and find a note mentioning a passcode. A hidden passage in the southeast leads to a forest area.
Forest area. This is where the good stuff is. Chests: Turbo Ether (southwest), 50,000 G (north), Megalixir (northwest side path), Megalixir (northeast). Most importantly, find the Apocalypse Arm in a hidden southeast path. This is Robo's most broken weapon; it deals 9999 damage on critical hits. Equip the Dragon's Tear to make crits more common.
Security section. Robot guards patrol the halls. Avoid their line of sight or get pushed into a pit (fight to escape). Reach the northwest room. Enter passcode BALL (the note said LLAB, which is BALL reversed) to disable guards.
Rescue sequence. Your main party gets trapped in the southeast room. Control switches to your inactive party members. Navigate them through the conveyor system: grab a Magic Capsule from a sparkling spot, a Regal Plate from an east detour, then reach the room with the door. Defeat enemies and disable the lockdown at the computer.
Final approach. Switch back to your main party. Navigate the lower halls while avoiding guards. Enter the southwest room and proceed through electrical hazards (stop when electricity activates). Defeat two Iron Maidens; they're extremely powerful. Step into the northern warp. Save, then proceed with Lucca.
Crimson Shade + Eggsterminator
A Lucca look-alike plus a robot buddy. The Eggsterminator has more HP than some main bosses.
- Crimson uses Barrage, Shadow Fire (Fire II), Explosion (Flare)
- Eggsterminator uses Poison Mist, Flashbomb, Blaring Din, Recover; absorbs Shadow and drains MP with every attack
- Kill Crimson first; she's weaker despite being the "main" boss
- Equip Red Mail to trivialize the Eggsterminator
- If Robo has Apocalypse Arm + Dragon's Tear, this fight ends in a few turns
Lucca's boost: +3 Speed, +5 Magic, +5 Stamina (permanent).
Time's Eclipse
After completing all three vortexes, return to the End of Time. Talk to Gaspar; something's happened while you were away. Check the bucket to access Time's Eclipse.
The approach. Head north and meet Magus in his Prophet outfit. He speaks of a new enemy that can devour dreams. He asks you not to interfere, then runs into the gate. Follow him if you're ready.
Exit the gate to find a Lavos-like creature with Schala floating above it. Lavos pushes Magus back into oblivion. The fight begins.
Dream Devourer
An upgraded Lavos using Schala in place of Queen Zeal. This thing can devour dreams from a distant dimension. Yes, really.
- Phase 1: Vulnerable to magic. If you use non-elemental physical attacks, it counters with Mana Reaver (drains all MP)
- Phase 2: Switches barriers. Now you must use physical attacks; all magic is absorbed. Counters with Chaos Zone (Confuse)
- Uses devastating attacks: Phantasm and The End of All and Nothing can one-shot characters
- If it uses a move that nullifies status protection, this fight gets much worse
- Cheese strat: Robo with Apocalypse Arm + Dragon's Tear deals 9999 on crits. The boss has absurd HP; this helps immensely.
- Glitch: If Dream Devourer switches barriers, using powerful magic techs (triple techs work best) can heal it until HP overflows past 32,768 and the battle ends
After the fight, the Dream Devourer prepares to destroy existence. Future Magus wakes up Schala, who warps your party back to its own time. Schala gives a speech about how she's changed and sends Future Magus back. Present Magus wakes up and decides to recover from his amnesia.
Rewards. Watch the new ending (connects to Chrono Cross). After the credits, a cutscene plays and you obtain the DreamSeeker, Crono's most powerful weapon with a 90% critical hit rate. The "Dream's Epilogue" ending is logged.
