How to Beat Pravoka Pirates

Bikke's pirate crew in Pravoka's northwest corner.

Introduction

The Pravoka Pirates are your second boss encounter and first multi-enemy fight in Final Fantasy 1 Pixel Remaster. Nine pirates led by Captain Bikke have taken over the northwest corner of Pravoka, and you’ll confront them after shopping and resting at the town’s Inn.

Victory here is rewarded with the Ship, which opens up the entire inner sea. You’ll gain access to Elfheim, the Marsh Cave, and eventually the outer ocean once the canal is cleared. The fight itself is barely a speed bump compared to the Ogres you dealt with on the road to Pravoka.

A few numbers worth flagging. Defense 0 means every physical hit lands at full power; even bare-handed Monks can one-shot each pirate. Accuracy 2% is comically low, so pirates whiff almost every swing against your front line. Magic Evasion 35 makes Sleep a high-success play, but with so little HP it’s barely worth the MP. Total fight rewards across all 9 pirates: 360 EXP, 360 Gil. Drop rate: 2% per pirate on the Leather Shield, which works out to roughly a 17% chance of seeing one across all 9 kills, so don’t count on it.

The pirates have no spells and no special moves. Every pirate takes a basic swing on every turn, with no surprise behaviour at low HP. The fight is purely about chewing through the 9 × 24 HP pool faster than they can chip you down.

Strategy

Quick Tips

  • Focus fire one at a time

Every pirate you kill is one fewer attack per round. Don't spread damage.

  • Pravoka weapons one-shot them

Defense 0 + 24 HP means a Broadsword or Battle Axe drops each pirate in one hit.

  • Skip Sleep

Cute trick but a waste of MP when physical attacks are already this efficient.

  • Buy Temper before sailing

Stacks with itself. Carries you through tougher Marsh Cave fights later.

  • Stock Antidotes

Sea encounters and the Marsh Cave both poison your party regularly.

Each of the 9 Pravoka Pirates has just 24 HP with zero Defense, so they go down fast to physical attacks. Most parties will clear this fight in 2-3 rounds without breaking a sweat.

The pirates’ zero Defense means every physical hit lands at full power. Your Warrior with a Broadsword from Pravoka’s weapon shop can one-shot each pirate, and even a bare-handed Monk deals enough to drop one in a single swing. The real strategy here is target selection. Kill them one at a time to reduce incoming damage each round rather than spreading your attacks across the group.

Sleep from the Cornelia Black Magic shop targets all enemies and lands on several pirates at once thanks to their low 35 Magic Evasion. It’s effective but honestly not worth the MP on enemies this fragile. Save your spell charges for the tougher encounters ahead. And with only 2 Accuracy, many of their attacks will miss entirely; your party is rarely in danger here.

Battle Plan

  • Physical attackers: Target one pirate at a time. A Warrior with any Pravoka-tier weapon can one-shot them.
  • Black Mage: Sleep disables multiple pirates, but regular attacks work just as well. Save your MP.
  • White Mage: Heal anyone below 30 HP. Most rounds won’t need healing since pirates miss often.
  • Monks: Their bare-handed damage is enough to one-shot each pirate.

After the Battle

After the fight, Captain Bikke surrenders his ship. The inner sea is now yours to sail, connecting Cornelia, Pravoka, and Elfheim to the south. Rest at the Inn and stock up on Potions before leaving town; the sea encounters on the way to Elfheim introduce five new bestiary entries, and four of them are weak to Thunder.

Grab a few Antidotes as well. The enemies around Elfheim and inside the Marsh Cave can poison your party, and getting caught without a cure in the middle of a dungeon is a quick way to wipe. If you haven’t bought Temper from Pravoka’s Black Magic shop, do it now. It’s one of the most important spells in the early game; it stacks with itself and dramatically increases your Warrior’s damage output for tougher fights ahead.
