Final Fantasy 1 - Key Items

Last updated: February 27, 2026

Final Fantasy 1 Pixel Remaster has 17 key items that gate story progression. None are missable. This guide covers every location in the order you'll find them, from the Lute in Cornelia to the Adamantite near endgame. For the full route through each area, see the walkthrough.

Most key items in FF1 are part of trade chains. The Crown leads to the Crystal Eye, which leads to the Jolt Tonic, which wakes the Elf Prince for the Mystic Key. Later, the Bottled Faerie becomes Oxyale, and the Rosetta Stone unlocks the Chime. Understanding these chains helps you plan ahead; if you're stuck, you've probably missed a step in the current chain.

The Mystic Key is the single most important item on this list. It opens locked doors in Cornelia Castle, Elven Castle, Western Keep, and Marsh Cave, unlocking dozens of chests with strong gear (including the Nitro Powder you need to progress). And you'll want to revisit every locked room as soon as you get it. Some of the best early-game weapons and armor sit behind those doors. But the key itself comes from the Elfheim chapter, so you won't have it until after clearing the Marsh Cave.
