The Evil Eye guards the Levistone
Evil Eye encounter on B2 of the Cavern of Ice

Introduction

The Evil Eye is the eighth boss in Final Fantasy 1 Pixel Remaster. It ambushes your party the moment you grab the Levistone on B2 of the Cavern of Ice. With only 162 HP, this is the easiest boss in the game by raw numbers. But it carries three instant-death spells (Death, Glare, and Rub), so letting it act even once can wipe a party member with no save.

You'll fight the Evil Eye around level 28-30 if you've been clearing the dungeon thoroughly. The Cavern of Ice is structured around cracked floors and looping paths between three floors; the Levistone sits in a room on B2 that you can only reach after descending through B3 first. Once you pick it up, the fight starts immediately. There's no chance to heal or rearrange gear beforehand, so make sure your party is ready before you step in.

Strategy

The Evil Eye has only 162 HP and can be killed in a single turn by a level 28+ party. Skip defensive buffs entirely and have every party member attack or cast their strongest offensive spell on turn one. Firaga, Thundaga, or a Hasted Warrior's physical attack alone can deal more than 162 damage; combine all four party members and the fight ends before it starts.

Speed is everything here. The Evil Eye's 92 Magic Defense isn't high enough to block your top-tier spells, and its 30 Defense won't stop a Warrior with the Flame Sword (picked up from the same dungeon on B2). Your Black Mage should cast Firaga or Thundaga. Your White Mage can attack physically or cast Diaga if you want to be safe. The Warrior and Monk both attack normally.

If the Evil Eye somehow survives turn one, it'll cast Death, Glare, or Rub on its next action. Each of these is an instant-kill spell that ignores HP entirely. There's no way to resist them and no way to prevent them; your only defense is being fast enough. And at 162 HP, you should be.

Battle Plan

  • Warrior - Physical attack with the Flame Sword from the B2 chest
  • Black Mage - Firaga or Thundaga for guaranteed overkill
  • Monk - Physical attack (bare-handed Monks hit hard enough at this level)
  • White Mage - Attack physically or cast Diaga for bonus damage

Quick Tips

  • One-turn kill - At 162 HP, a level 28+ party ends this in a single round.
  • Skip buffs and healing - Every turn spent not attacking is a turn the Evil Eye might use Death or Glare.

After the Battle

With the Evil Eye gone, grab the Levistone from the pedestal. You still need to escape the dungeon. Fall through a crack to drop back to B3, fight through the undead, and retrace your path east to the stairs. From B1, head northeast past the long room (where you grabbed the Ice Shield earlier) and take the stairs out.

Back outside, canoe to Crescent Lake and rest at the Inn. Then head south by canoe to the small desert below town. Walking into the desert with the Levistone raises the Airship from beneath the dunes. The Airship gives you access to the entire world map, and your next stop is the Citadel of Trials for the Rat's Tail and your class upgrades. Stock up on healing items and Gold Needles before heading there; Basilisks and Medusas can petrify your party in the Citadel. See the trophy guide for the Veteran Treasure Hunter trophy, which should pop around this point if you've been collecting everything.
