Final Fantasy 1 - Armor

FF1 Pixel Remaster has 37 pieces of armor including body armor, shields, helmets, gloves, and accessories. Heavy armor is restricted to Warriors and Knights, while mages rely on robes and armlets.

A few pieces define the endgame. Dragon Mail has the highest DEF of any body armor and is equippable by Knights and Ninjas. Aegis Shield is the best shield in the game, Knight-only, with solid elemental resistance on top of raw defense. Ribbons prevent every status effect in the game; you'll find them in Chaos Shrine Past, and they should go on your squishiest characters first. White Robe and Black Robe are found in the final dungeon and give your mages a real defensive boost right when they need it most. Against Chaos, Ribbon placement alone can decide whether your party survives.

But gear priorities shift depending on your party composition. Early on, Iron Armor from Elfheim is the Warrior's best upgrade and it's affordable. Monks are a different story entirely; buying armor for them is mostly wasted Gil, since bare stats scale with level and heavy armor slows them down. Mage armor is cheap (Copper Armlet, Silver Armlet) and worth every coin for the survival boost. Shields only matter for Warriors, Knights, and Ninjas, so don't bother shopping for one unless you're running those classes. Pair your defensive picks with the right weapon, and check the walkthrough for where each treasure piece drops.
