Chaos on B5 of the Chaos Shrine
Chaos, the final boss of Final Fantasy 1

Introduction

Chaos is the final boss of Final Fantasy 1 Pixel Remaster and the true form of Garland, who has been manipulating time from 2,000 years in the past. He sits on B5 of the Chaos Shrine, one floor below Tiamat (Past). With 20,000 HP, 100 Attack, 100 Defense, and resistance to every element in the game, he's by far the toughest enemy you'll face. He also has access to a wide spell list that includes Curaja (self-healing), Haste (self-buff), and party-wide elemental attacks like Earthquake, Tsunami, and Blaze. Your party should be level 45 or higher, and you'll want full MP and a stockpile of Elixirs before engaging.

To reach Chaos, you'll need to defeat all four Fiend rematches on B1 through B4: Lich (Past), Marilith (Past), Kraken (Past), and Tiamat (Past). None of them respawn after defeat, so you can leave to rest between fights if needed. Circle B5's room and enter from the south to find Garland, reborn as Chaos.

Strategy

To beat Chaos in FF1, spend the first three to four turns on defense: cast NulAll to block his elemental spells, then layer Protera and Invisira to reduce his physical damage. Once your buffs are active, cast Haste on your Knight and Ninja, stack Temper on your main attacker, and let physical damage carry the fight. Your White Wizard should heal with Curaja every turn after the initial buffs are set.

Chaos has 20,000 HP, no weakness, and resists every element. Offensive magic like Flare and Holy won't do much against his 200 Magic Defense; physical damage is your primary output. His most dangerous move is casting Haste on himself. A Hasted Chaos with 100 Attack can drop party members in a single round, even through Protera. When that happens, reapply your defensive buffs immediately.

He can also cast Curaja on himself, which heals a significant chunk of his HP. It's rare, but when it happens, the fight drags on. Don't panic. Your sustained damage from Hasted, Tempered fighters with Excalibur and Masamune will outpace his self-healing over time.

Battle Plan

  • White Wizard - Cast NulAll on turn one, then Protera and Invisira on turns two and three; heal with Curaja every turn afterward
  • Black Wizard - Cast Haste on Knight and Ninja, then stack Temper on your primary attacker; use Flare only if you have spare charges
  • Knight - Use Giant's Gloves (Saber) on turn one, then attack with Excalibur every turn
  • Ninja/Master - Equip Masamune and attack every turn; the Ninja's sustained damage is critical for a fight this long

Keep at least two Full-Life charges in reserve at all times. If someone goes down, revive them on the same turn. And don't be stingy with Elixirs or Ethers. This is the last fight in the game, so every consumable you don't use is wasted.

Quick Tips

  • Physical damage is your main output - Elemental spells are resisted; Flare and Holy do minimal damage against 200 Magic Defense.
  • Hasted Chaos is the real threat - When he buffs himself with Haste, his physical hits become brutal. Reapply Protera and Invisira right away.
  • Full-Life is your safety net - Revive fallen party members immediately; losing a turn of healing or damage output can spiral fast.
  • Curaja self-heal is annoying but rare - Your sustained damage will outpace it as long as your buffs stay active.
  • Use everything you have - Elixirs, Ethers, Dry Ethers, spell charges. Nothing carries over past the credits.

Rewards

Game Complete

After the Battle

When Chaos falls, the 2,000-year time loop is broken and the credits roll. The Prophecy Foretold trophy unlocks automatically after the ending sequence. Save on the completed file when prompted.

If you're going for the Platinum, load your completed save afterward. The Chaos Shrine basement floors are the best grinding spot for the Seasoned Hero trophy (all four party members at level 50). Turn on 4x EXP and auto-battle to speed things up. Check your bestiary for any missing entries too; Warmech on the Flying Fortress bridge is usually the last one people need.
