Armor - Final Fantasy 1
There are 40 armor pieces in Final Fantasy 1 Pixel Remaster split across body armor, shields, helmets, and gloves. Dragon Mail and Diamond Armor tie for the highest DEF at 42, but Dragon Mail is the better pick since it resists Fire, Ice, and Lightning instead of just Lightning. Ribbon only has 1 DEF but resists nearly every status and elemental attack in the game. You can find 3 Ribbons across the Waterfall Cavern, Sunken Shrine, and Flying Fortress.

Best Armor for Knights
The Knight has the deepest armor pool in the game and can equip every endgame-tier piece. Dragon Mail, Diamond Helm, Diamond Gloves, Aegis Shield, and Diamond Shield are all Knight-exclusive, giving them the highest possible DEF total of any class.
- Body: Dragon Mail. 42 DEF and resists Fire, Ice, and Lightning. Mirage Tower 2F.
- Shield: Aegis Shield. 16 DEF, resists Stone element, and grants immunity to Poison and Stone status. Mirage Tower 1F. Swap to Diamond Shield (Sunken Shrine 5F or Flying Fortress 2F) when Lightning resist matters more.
- Helm: Diamond Helm. 8 DEF, Knight-exclusive. Sunken Shrine 5F. Switch to Ribbon for any fight where status protection beats raw DEF.
- Gloves: Protect Ring. 8 DEF with Mind resist. Flying Fortress 1F, 3F, or Chaos Shrine B2. Diamond Gloves are the alternative when you’d rather complete the matching Knight set.
Best Armor for Masters
The Master can’t wear mail armor or shields, so the body slot maxes at Diamond Armlet. Damage comes from level scaling and unarmed attacks, not gear, so prioritize status protection over raw DEF.
- Body: Diamond Armlet. 34 DEF, the highest body slot Master can equip. Sunken Shrine 5F.
- Shield: None. Master can’t equip a shield.
- Helm: Ribbon. Resists nearly every status and elemental attack in the game. Three are available in the Waterfall Cavern, Sunken Shrine 2F, and Flying Fortress 2F.
- Gloves: Protect Ring. 8 DEF with Mind resist. Flying Fortress 1F, 3F, or Chaos Shrine B2.
Best Armor for Ninjas
The Ninja can wear most heavy mail but is locked out of Knight’s Armor and the Knight-exclusive top tier (Dragon Mail, Diamond Armor, Diamond Helm, Diamond Gloves, Diamond Shield, Aegis Shield). They make up for the missing top-end gear with helms and gloves that cast support spells in battle.
- Body: Ice Armor or Flame Mail. Both 34 DEF, both grant elemental resist (Fire on Ice Armor, Ice on Flame Mail). Cavern of Ice B3 and Mount Gulg B5 respectively. Diamond Armlet (Sunken Shrine 5F) is the neutral 34 DEF option if you’d rather not commit to a resist.
- Shield: Protect Cloak. 8 DEF, no element binding. Flying Fortress 3F or Chaos Shrine B2.
- Helm: Healing Helm. 6 DEF and casts Heal in battle. Mirage Tower 1F or Flying Fortress 1F. Ribbon is the swap when status protection matters more.
- Gloves: Giant’s Gloves. 6 DEF and casts Saber, an L7 black-magic attack buff that Ninja can’t cast natively. Sunken Shrine 2F.
Best Armor for Red Wizards
Red Wizards can’t wear the heavy mail upgrades, so Diamond Armlet is the only way for them to hit the 34 DEF body-slot cap. Their native L7 access to both black and white magic means they rarely need spell-casting gear, so prioritize pure defense over in-battle spell accessories.
- Body: Diamond Armlet. 34 DEF, no class restriction. Sunken Shrine 5F. Mythril Mail (18 DEF) from Crescent Lake or Mount Duergar is the early-game upgrade.
- Shield: Protect Cloak. 8 DEF, no element binding. Flying Fortress 3F or Chaos Shrine B2.
- Helm: Ribbon. Resists nearly every status and elemental attack. Important for the mid-line caster who pulls double duty as backup attacker.
- Gloves: Protect Ring. 8 DEF with Mind resist (mitigates the Death and Kill instant-death spells). Flying Fortress 1F, 3F, or Chaos Shrine B2. Gauntlets (6 DEF, casts Thundara) is the fallback when MP runs dry and you need unlimited offense.
Best Armor for White Wizards
The White Robe is the White Wizard’s class-defining piece: Fire and Mind resist, a free Invisira cast that boosts the whole party’s evasion, and the highest mail-tier armor they can equip. Diamond Armlet edges it out on raw DEF but loses the resist and the in-battle spell.
- Body: White Robe. 24 DEF, resists Fire and Mind, casts Invisira. Flying Fortress 2F. Diamond Armlet (34 DEF, Sunken Shrine 5F) is the alternative when raw DEF is the priority.
- Shield: Protect Cloak. 8 DEF, no element binding. Flying Fortress 3F or Chaos Shrine B2.
- Helm: Ribbon. Resists Sleep, Paralysis, Silence, Darkness, Poison, Stone, and Stun. Critical insurance for the healer.
