Brecconary Town
Brecconary is directly south of Tantegel. You can see it from the castle gates. This is where you'll spend your starting gold and grind your first few levels. Don't leave the area until you're properly equipped.
Shop Inventory
| Item | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Bamboo Pole | 10G | +2 Attack. Garbage. Skip it. |
| Club | 60G | +4 Attack. Your first real weapon. |
| Copper Sword | 180G | +10 Attack. Save for this. |
| Clothes | 20G | +2 Defense. Barely better than naked. |
| Leather Armor | 70G | +4 Defense. Worth the extra gold. |
| Small Shield | 90G | +4 Defense. Buy after armor. |
| Herb | 24G | Restores 20-35 HP. Always carry some. |
| Torch | 8G | Lights caves. You already have one. |
| Dragon Scale | 20G | +2 Defense when held. Cheap boost. |
The inn costs 6G per night. Don't bother — use the old man in Tantegel for free MP restoration instead. Cast Heal, restore MP, repeat. Saves gold for equipment.
Starting Purchases
You have 120G from King Lorik. Best opening buy: Club (60G) + Clothes (20G) = 80G total, leaving 40G for Herbs. This lets you kill Slimes without dying immediately. If you want to gamble, skip the Clothes and buy Leather Armor (70G) instead — you'll be 10G short of the Club, but two Slime kills fixes that.
The Dragon Scale is in the item shop at the southeast corner of town. It gives +2 defense when held. Unlike weapons and armor, you have to manually equip it through the Item menu. Worth grabbing once you have spare gold.
Early Grinding
Stay within sight of Brecconary and Tantegel. Slimes spawn in the grass nearby — they have 3-4 HP and deal 1-2 damage. You'll kill dozens of them. Each one gives 1 EXP and 1-2 Gold. Tedious, but necessary.
Reach level 3 before pushing further. You learn Heal at level 3, which changes everything. With Heal and the free MP restoration in Tantegel, you can grind indefinitely without spending gold on inns or Herbs. Red Slimes and Drakees appear slightly further from town; they're tougher but give better rewards.
Talking to NPCs
Brecconary's residents mention Erdrick's equipment, the Dragonlord's castle to the northwest, and a princess held captive. Write it down. One NPC hints about a hidden cave; another mentions Garinham to the north. These clues matter later.
