Items & Equipment
You can equip one weapon, one armor, and one shield. Buying a new piece automatically replaces your old one — the shopkeeper buys back your current gear at a fraction of its value. Weapon attack adds directly to your Strength. Armor and shield defense combine with half your Agility to determine your total defense.
Upgrade equipment whenever you can afford it. Even small stat boosts matter; they let you kill enemies faster and survive longer, which means more gold per hour. Don't hoard money waiting for the next tier.
Weapons
Seven weapons total, ranging from the pathetic Bamboo Pole to the legendary Erdrick's Sword. The Flame Sword is the best you can buy; Erdrick's Sword must be found in Charlock Castle.
| Weapon | Attack | Price | Where to Buy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bamboo Pole | +2 | 10G | Brecconary, Cantlin. You start with this in Remix versions. |
| Club | +4 | 60G | Brecconary, Cantlin, Garinham. Your first real weapon. |
| Copper Sword | +10 | 180G | Brecconary, Cantlin, Garinham, Kol, Rimuldar. |
| Hand Axe | +15 | 560G | Garinham, Kol, Rimuldar. Solid midgame weapon. |
| Broad Sword | +20 | 1,500G | Rimuldar, Cantlin. |
| Flame Sword | +28 | 9,800G | Cantlin only. Best purchasable weapon. |
| Erdrick's Sword | +40 | — | Found in Charlock Castle. The ultimate weapon. |
Armor
Armor matters more than weapons early on. The difference between Clothes and Leather Armor is life or death against Drakees. Magic Armor and Erdrick's Armor have special effects beyond their defense values.
| Armor | Defense | Price | Where to Buy / Find |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clothes | +2 | 20G | Brecconary. Barely better than nothing. |
| Leather Armor | +4 | 70G | Brecconary, Garinham. |
| Chain Mail | +10 | 300G | Garinham, Cantlin. |
| Half Plate | +16 | 1,000G | Garinham, Kol, Rimuldar, Cantlin. |
| Full Plate | +24 | 3,000G | Kol, Rimuldar, Cantlin. |
| Magic Armor | +24 | 7,700G | Rimuldar, Cantlin. Restores 1 HP per 4 steps. Reduces Hurt/Hurtmore by ⅓. |
| Erdrick's Armor | +28 | — | Found in Hauksness. Restores 1 HP per step. Blocks Stopspell. Reduces fire breath and Hurt/Hurtmore by ⅓. No damage from swamps/barriers. |
Shields
Only three shields in the game. The Silver Shield costs a fortune (14,800G) but the +20 defense is worth it for the endgame.
| Shield | Defense | Price | Where to Buy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small Shield | +4 | 90G | Brecconary, Kol. Good early purchase. |
| Large Shield | +10 | 800G | Garinham, Cantlin. Midgame standard. |
| Silver Shield | +20 | 14,800G | Cantlin only. Expensive but worth it. |
Consumable Items
Buy Herbs constantly. They're cheap and reliable healing. Magic Keys are essential once you reach Rimuldar — buy them there, not in Brecconary or Cantlin where they cost more.
| Item | Price | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Herb | 24G | Restores 20-35 HP. Always carry several. |
| Torch | 8G | Lights up caves. Replaced by Radiant spell at level 9. |
| Wings | 70G | Teleports you to Tantegel. Replaced by Return spell at level 13. |
| Dragon's Scale | 20G | +2 defense while held. Cheap boost early on. |
| Fairy Water | 38G | Repels weak enemies briefly. Replaced by Repel spell at level 15. |
| Magic Key | 53-98G | Opens locked doors. Buy in Rimuldar (53G) — cheapest price. |
Quest Items
These items are required to complete the game. Most are found in specific locations; a few are given by NPCs. You can't sell them.
| Item | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Erdrick's Token | Proves your heritage. Required to get the Rainbow Drop. |
| Fairy Flute | Puts the Golem to sleep. Use it to enter Cantlin without fighting. |
| Silver Harp | Summons enemies when used. Trade it for the Staff of Rain. |
| Staff of Rain | Combine with Stones of Sunlight to create the Rainbow Drop. |
| Stones of Sunlight | Found in Tantegel Castle. Combine with Staff of Rain. |
| Gwaelin's Love | Given by Princess Gwaelin. Shows your distance from Tantegel. |
| Rainbow Drop | Creates the bridge to Charlock Island. Made from Staff of Rain + Stones of Sunlight. |
| Ball of Light | The goal of your quest. Take it from the Dragonlord. |
Cursed Items
Two cursed items exist. Don't equip them — just sell them. If you accidentally put on the Cursed Belt, talk to the old man in Brecconary to remove it.
| Item | Sell Price | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Cursed Belt | 180G | Prevents entering Tantegel. Causes missed turns in combat. Remove at Brecconary. |
| Cursed Necklace | 1,200G | Hidden treasure. Just sell it — good money for junk. |
Broken Items
The Fighter's Ring is supposed to boost attack or critical hit chance. Due to a bug in the original NES code, it does nothing. Sells for 15G. Don't bother keeping it.
